Course Outline

Introduction to Ableton Live 10 is an online course that focuses on basic operations of the DAW (desktop audio workstation) Ableton Live. Students will be given the necessary knowledge and skills to record and edit Audio/MIDI files, add effects and process audio, manipulate samples to create their own sounds and produce a basic 4 track song. On successfully completing this course, students should have acquired foundational knowledge and developed basic skills in audio production. Students will be introduced to many virtual instruments and devices that Live has to offer. Successful students can specialise and enrol in future courses that focus on sound design (synthesis), implementation of video, external custom hardware (Arduino) and much more.

Requirements and Recommendations

Participating students completing the course online should have access to

  • Computer (mac or pc)
  • Ableton Live 10 software*
  • A pair of headphones
  • A MIDI keyboard is recommended but not mandatory

This five week short course is targeted for aspiring composers who are interested in developing their compositional skills across a variety of genres and styles. Under expert guidance, participants will be introduced to compositional techniques and processes, working towards a final presentation of an original work.

Keyboard Skills 1 is designed for participants with no or limited prior knowledge of the keyboard or piano. In this five week short course, you will learn how to play and interpret chord progressions to popular contemporary songs, using chords in the right hand and bass parts in the left hand. By learning to unlock the ‘code’ for understanding playing chord charts, you will develop the fundamental skills to perform musical works in a variety of styles.

Course Outline

In this five week introductory short course, you will learn how to play chord progressions to popular contemporary songs, developing skills to play chord shapes and strumming patterns to a variety of styles and songs, in a small group environment. By learning to unlock the ‘code’ for understanding playing chord charts, you will develop the fundamental skills to perform contemporary works and songs. At the conclusion of the course, a series of short videos displaying your new talents will be edited and synced together to create a virtual concert.

Requirements and Recommendations

Participants must own their own acoustic or electric guitar.

This five week short course is aimed for participants on the bass at beginner level. Participants will develop skills and knowledge on bass guitar techniques and performance at an introductory level and in a small group environment. The course focuses on learning to perform basic rhythmic and chordal patterns, as well as learning to play some classic contemporary bass lines to popular songs. 

 

Requirements and Recommendations

You will need your own electric or acoustic bass and a small amplifier.

This course runs over five weeks and introduces you to contemporary music theory in a digestible and enjoyable way. Learn to read simple music notation, understand what a key signature is and how basic chords are built as well as understanding the basics of rhythm.

Course Outline

This unique five week program will teach participants of every instrument or level of experience to play and enjoy traditional elements Afro Cuban music. You will learn how to play basic patterns on the timbales, congas, bongoes and hand percussion. If you are already an instrumentalist, you will learn to play Afro- Cuban harmonic and melodic patterns on your instrument. The workshops will conclude with a concert in the final week.
