Starting in February, 2020 and running across the whole year, our Short Courses are:

  • Very manageable (each course is only five weeks in duration at 2 hours per week);
  • Great fun. Every course is designed to provide key skills and knowledge in a friendly, relaxed environment;
  • Well designed and delivered. Each course has been carefully prepared by experts in the field and delivered by fully qualified professional musicians and educators;
  • Flexible. Courses start with little or no assumed knowledge and gradually progress through levels at a manageable and flexible pace.

Course Outline

Keyboard Skills 1 is designed for participants with no or limited prior knowledge of the keyboard or piano. In this 5 week short course, you will learn how to play and interpret chord progressions to popular contemporary songs, using chords in the right hand and bass parts in the left hand. By learning to unlock the ‘code’ for understanding playing chord charts, you will develop the fundamental skills to perform musical works in a variety of styles.  At the conclusion of the course, you will be invited to perform a work in an intimate concert environment with others.

 

Requirements and Recommendations

All equipment is provided. It is recommended to have a keyboard at home.

Course Outline

In this 5 week introductory short course, you will learn how to play chord progressions to popular contemporary songs, developing skills to play chord shapes and strumming patterns to a variety of styles and songs, in a small group environment. By learning to unlock the ‘code’ for understanding playing chord charts, you will develop the fundamental skills to perform contemporary works and songs. At the conclusion of the course, everyone will be invited to play a work in an intimate concert environment.

 

Requirements and Recommendations

Participants must own their own acoustic or electric guitar.

Course Outline

The joy of collective singing cannot be easily expressed in words. This 5 week short course is targeted for aspiring singers at a beginner level. Working with other vocalists, you will learn to blend in a section, develop performance techniques and gain confidence in stagecraft as well as developing repertoire from a diverse, fun range of styles and genres. The course will conclude with a concert performance.

Course Outline

 

This 5 week short course is aimed for participants on the bass at beginner level. Participants will develop skills and knowledge on bass guitar techniques and performance at an introductory level and in a small group environment. The course focuses on learning to perform basic rhythmic and chordal patterns, as well as learning to play some classic contemporary bass lines to popular songs. The course will conclude with a performance that may include other instrumentalists and singers.

In this 5 week introductory course, you will learn the fundamentals of rhythmic patterns and songs from different genres based on the music of Cuba and Brazil and learn how to perform with passion in a Latin ensemble. The class is designed to be inclusive of all abilities and skill levels and to be highly interactive as participants collectively explore the street music of Cuba and Brazil.

There are no pre-requisites and all equipment is provided. Comfortable clothing and water is recommended.

This 5 week short course is targeted for aspiring composers who are interested in developing their compositional skills across a variety of genres and styles. Under expert guidance, participants will be introduced to compositional techniques and processes, working towards a final presentation of an original work.

Course Outline

This unique five week program will teach participants of every instrument or level of experience to play and enjoy traditional elements Afro Cuban music. You will learn how to play basic patterns on the timbales, congas, bongoes and hand percussion. If you are already an instrumentalist, you will learn to play Afro- Cuban harmonic and melodic patterns on your instrument. The workshops will conclude with a concert in the final week.
