Damien Arthur
Qualitative Research Damien Arthur is based at the University of Adelaide where he specialises in Consumer Behaviour. Much of his research examines the symbolic roles that brands play in the lives of today's youth. His PhD thesis is an ethnographic investigation of the Australian Hip Hop culture, a youth subculture firmly rooted in consumer based objects of music, clothes and symbols. He has published in Psychology and Marketing, Australasian Marketing Journal and Qualitative Market Research and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Young Consumers journal. He is also active professionally and regularly provides consulting advice to corporate clients on how to successfully engage and communicate with Australia's young adults. ![]()
Paul Dickson
Entertainment Marketing Paul Dickson has 29 years experience in the recorded music business in senior management roles. He served as CEO of News Corp’s Festival Mushroom Records from1998 to 2002, and prior to that was Group Managing Director PolyGram Records Australia (now Universal Music). After starting his music career at CBS (Sony), he built a strong reputation in entertainment marketing, working as a Marketing Director for Marantz (in both Australia and Europe) and then PolyGram. Since retirement he has consulted to Sony Music, Massive Inc (advertising in computer games websites) and was one of the founding partners in a NYC startup MusicICON.
Sarah Gardner
Cultural Policy Sarah Gardner became the founding Executive Director of the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (www.ifacca.org) in 2001. In the ten years prior she held various senior executive positions at the Australia Council, chiefly Director Strategy and Policy. In this role she managed the Council's policy, research and advocacy activities. She was formerly the Director of Public Affairs for the Australian Bicentennial Authority and a consultant in the private and public sectors for leading Australian firm Issues Australia. Sarah has a BSc and Masters in Public Policy from the University of Sydney and serves on the board of Object and the World Culture Forum.
Warwick Hamilton
Event Management (May 2008) In 1987 Warwick Hamilton established Events Unlimited International, which has become a national and international multi-award winning special events company. Warwick has coordinated and managed spectacular events in Australia and worldwide ranging from a black tie, outdoor Symphony Concert for 10,000 guests (in a paddock), to televised gala nights such as The Miss Australia Awards. His company's credits include a National Australia Day Special Award and a Tourism Award. Warwick is currently a guest lecturer in event management at The University of Technology, Sydney.
Wendy McCarthy
Arts Board Induction Wendy McCarthy AO is an experienced educator who is very well placed to explore the functioning of Arts Boards, having held executive and non-executive positions such as: Chair, Symphony Australia; Chair, Australian Heritage Commission; CEO, National Trust of Australia, NSW; Deputy Chair, Australian Broadcasting Corporation; General Manager of Marketing & Communications, Australian Bicentennial Authority; Member, Sydney Symphony Orchestra Council; and Trustee, Adelaide Festival Centre Trust. Among her current responsibilities, she is Chair, Plan International Australia, and Chair, McGrath Estate Agents.
Steven Miller
Accounting Steven Miller has 24 years experience in the chartered accounting field and is the Principal at Steven J Miller & Co Chartered Accountants. His involvement with the arts includes Directorships with the Sydney Film Festival (1994 - 2000), the Australian Music Centre and Railway Street Theatre (formerly the Q Theatre) and ASDACS Ltd (the Australian Screen Directors Authorship Collecting Society). Steven is also Treasurer of SAMAG (the Sydney Arts Management Advisory Group). His firm provides accounting, taxation and audit services to a wide range of clients in the Arts industry.
Duncan Peppercorn
Strategic Planning Duncan Peppercorn has an MA in Engineering Science, and a background in strategic consulting with McKinsey and Company and Bain International. He has also worked in arts administration. Since 2002 he has supported many Australian arts organisations with their strategy development, as well as working with corporate clients in fields ranging from banking, through publishing to steel and concrete.
Tim Roberts
Relationship Marketing Tim Roberts has over twenty years experience in ticketing and arts marketing throughout Australasia and internationally. Tim specialises in CRM and audience development and analysis for the arts. He regularly consults with arts venues, organisations and Ministries around Australia. He has lectured at the School of Arts Management at the West Australian Academy of the Performing Arts (WAAPA), School of Arts Management LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts in Singapore and has presented at numerous industry conferences nationally and internationally. Tim is co-author of FULL HOUSE: Turning Data into Audiences with editions published in 2006 by the Australia Council and Creative New Zealand.
Bob Robertson
New Venture Planning Professor Bob Robertson has held senior positions at UTS, such as Dean of the Faculty of Business, and Vice-President of UTS, with responsibility for commercial development, international activities, continuing professional education, corporate relations and alumni development. On his retirement from the University in 2004, he was made an Emeritus Professor of the University and was appointed Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Business where he continues to supervise PhD students. He is the owner of successful consultancy companies in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore and has served as an active Company Director on 12 Boards, including the Australian Institute of Music
Stuart Rubin
International Business Management Stuart Rubin has developed a strong international perspective from his 30 years in the music industry. Starting in 1976 in New Zealand with major record label PolyGram, he held senior roles in Australia before moving to Hong Kong in the 1990s to serve as BMG's Vice President International Marketing for the Asia/Pacific Region. In 2001, he was summoned to New York to become Senior Vice President International for BMG Entertainment, building up the world roster of BMG artists and labels. When BMG merged with Sony in 2004, he was made Senior Vice President International-Commercial Marketing Group, where he established an international priority and strategic marketing system for the merged catalogue assets.
Shane Simpson
Copyright Law, Contractual Law, Entertainment Law Shane Simpson is a senior partner of Simpsons Solicitors. A former barrister and legal academic he has written or edited numerous books including The Business of Music, and Music: The Business and the Law. He was the founding director of the Arts Law Centre of Australia. He headed the Federal Government Inquiry into "Copyright Collecting Societies in Australia". One of the most experienced lawyers and deal makers in the Australian music business, he also consults to governments, NGO's, other law firms, institutions and major corporations, both nationally and internationally.
Michael Smellie
Organisational Leadership Michael Smellie has held senior positions in the international recorded music industry, serving in 2004 and 2005 as worldwide Chief Operating Officer, Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Prior to this he served as Chief Operating Officer BMG (2001-2004) where he oversaw a number of BMG's worldwide departments, including Finance, Legal and Business Affairs, IS&T, Audit, and New Technologies/Strategic Development. Michael joined BMG in 1993 as Managing Director BMG Australia, and was named Senior Vice President BMG Asia Pacific in 1994. Earlier in his career, he served as Managing Director at PolyGram Australia. Michael currently works as a consultant for Bertelsmann. He has previously hosted leadership seminars for senior BMG executives.
Timothy Walker
Strategic Partnership Negotiation Timothy Walker AM was appointed Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in November 2002. He was formerly the founder and Chief Executive of World Orchestras, a company established to present an International Orchestras Season at the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne Concert Hall. Prior to that he served as General Manager of the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) for ten years, from 1989 to 1999. He has spent a six year term on the Board of the International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA), and has served on the Boards of a number of Australian arts and cultural organisations.

Paul is considered a leading authority on the Balanced Scorecard and Six Sigma. He has written several national training programs in KPI analysis and reporting for CPA Australia. Paul's recent book is The Measurement and Management of Strategic Change (Pearson Education, Thomson Learning).
Paul Saintilan
(Course Co-ordinator) Arts & Entertainment Management, Managing Creativity Paul Saintilan has held senior positions in Australia and the UK in the recorded music and performing arts sectors. In the 1990s he was based in London, where he worked as an International Marketing Director at EMI and Director of Strategic Development at Decca. Since returning to Australia he has worked in the not-for-profi t sector as Director of Marketing & Development at Musica Viva Australia. He is currently Head of Arts Management at AIM. Prior to his business career, Paul studied music composition with Peter Sculthorpe while completing a music degree at the University of Sydney. He has an MBA degree (AGSM) and is pursuing a part-time PhD project in marketing.
