Soulfood Lunchtime Concerts
AIM has had a big year so far in terms of live performances. Our lunchtime Soulfood live series kicked off with ‘the best of Aussie rock’, and progressed through the year with ‘Swing for Your Supper’ by Music Theatre students, ‘Music for Film and TV’ by the Production department, ‘Australian Classical Music' and ‘Edible Physical Theatre’ by AADA. Hundreds of High School students have attended these events throughout the year, and AIM students have been busy preparing, rehearsing and performing in the AIM Concert Venue each month.
Showcase
Mid year saw us launch our second ever Showcase, an extravaganza of 5 live performances across all departments, and a premiere event for AIM in 2008. Showcase was held over 4 days in May, and was a massive undertaking involving all departments of AIM, as we celebrate 40 years of music and 40 years of AIM, with music from the 60’s through to today. The AIM showcase is another opportunity for students to integrate with other departments, and deliver to a full house with full production, lighting and sound.
Musical
September saw our sold out Musical ‘Promises Promises’ take the stage for 6 performances. Directed by AIM’s Head of Music Theatre Jennifer Murphy, Promises is best summed up by these few quotes from audience members:
“What a spectacular production the students of AIM have put together. We thoroughly enjoyed last night's performance and still can't believe how well it was presented. As fans of all things Bacharach (and remembering the original London production of the show) we were amazed at the way your young, vibrant cast and musicians recreated that 60's feel in such a totally professional way”.
“It is a great production that AIM, the performers and creative team can be extremely proud of. I am grateful for the opportunity to have seen a show that is rarely performed and to experience the talent level of this institution's students”.
“Please let all the cast know that my husband and 10 year old daughter LOVED the show. They were all fabulous. We look forward to your next production”.
Jam Nights
Throughout the year AIM students have held a series of very successful music jam nights at a local venue, giving students the opportunity to not only have some fun, but to take what they learn in the class room and apply it in the real world.
Venue and Event Opportunities
In addition to this, AIM bands and artists have also performed at the Sydney Easter Show, Port Fest, Basement, World Skills Event at the State Theatre, World Youth Day events, Surry Hills and New Caledonia Music Festivals, NSW Art Gallery, not to mention the variety gigs around Sydney venues that many of our students participate in each week.
Masterclasses
The AIM concert Venue has also been the venue of choice for Sarah Blasko and the Kurrawong Ensemble masterclass, Jazz virtuoso Kurt Elling, and international musicians Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, who have all conducted workshops and masterclasses here at AIM, and provided AIM students with the opportunity to hear and interact with some of the finest performers in the business.
