Strathfield Symphony to feature their largest ochestra ever!
Australian conductor, Sarah-Grace Williams will lead the largest ever company of musicians to play together in a single Strathfield Symphony Orchestra concert when they perform The Planets by Gustav Holst in September. They'll be joined in the last movement by PROCLaim, a 20 member vocal ensemble from the Australian Institute of Music, to bring the total amount of musicians on stage to well over 100.
The concert opens with a subtle 20 piece string orchestra playing The Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg. The suite which is full of strength and gentility, playfulness and meditation is dedicated to one of Scandinavia's great literary figures, Ludvig Holberg. The orchestra then swells to 90 players for what is regarded as one of the loudest pieces of music ever written, and in parts, one of the quietest. Gustav Holst's, The Planets will include two sets of timpani and two harps for a sound which is as big as the universe itself.
'PetershamTown Hall was built around the same time The Planets was written. Its beautiful art-deco design will resonate with the beauty, power and depth of the work,' says Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams.
Holst's music must be considered the forerunner of the 'Hollywood Space Movie' style of composing. In particular, John Williams' Star Wars music is heavily indebted to both the 'Mars' and 'Uranus' movements.
This is a once-only concert performance not to be missed!
