When Cassie Greaves sings as part of AIM’s entertainment at PORTfest on Sunday 7 September, the audience will have a great chance to hear an Aussie jazz star in the making.

Singing wasn’t always on Cassie's radar. A chance encounter 4 years ago with jazz musicians James Morrison and Emma Pask led to this Gymea Bay saxophonist making a musical gear change.

“I’d been playing the sax for 13 years when James and Emma heard me singing at a band rehearsal,” says Cassie. These luminaries of the Australian jazz world were blown away and encouraged her to start voice training.

Cassie is now completing a Bachelor of Music in voice at the Australian Institute of Music (AIM), as well as teaching both voice and sax at Engadine Music.

Despite her youth and relatively short career, she has already clocked up some incredible musical experiences, including performing as a soloist in an a cappella choir for Queen Elizabeth II, as well as learning singing and scatting technique from some of Cuba’s finest vocalists.

Cassie’s dreams of one day leading her own jazz band as lead singer and sax player.

AIM attracts a diverse range of performance students from contemporary to classical and music theatre.

Cassie recently played PORTfest 08, and James Morrison in a 1 hour set of jazz standards.
