AIM's Classical Department Gets World Class Treatment

Story compiled by Steve Hibbins

The Australian Institute of Music had the honour of recently welcoming Yamaha’s internationally reknowned senior Piano Technician Mr Akihiko Shindo, to service the equally renowned CFX Concert Grand piano, residing on campus in the John Painter Hall.

The CFX Concert Grand Piano is Yamaha’s flagship instrument and is currently being used by several of Australia’s top music institutions, including Sydney Opera House, not to mention AIM's own Classical Performance department.

Mr Shindo has been in the business for 34 years and has been brought over especially by Yamaha Japan on a nationwide visit to Australia.

Speaking with Eric Ong, Yamaha Piano Technical Manager, who is also on tour with Mr Shindo, “we all want that nice, rich bell sound. To keep these pianos in top order, they require servicing approximately every 2 years, which can take between 90 minutes to 2 hours, as the hammers are finely tested and adjusted" he said.

Using only the world’s finest materials such as specially seasoned woods that resonate for long periods, hi-grade felts for hammers, quality leathers, cast-iron plates and rigid quality control, every component, including the method of assembly and the quality checks, create the final product which is the CFX Concert Grand as we know it today. These handcrafted instruments are backed by over a hundred years of high calibre concert piano production, with extensive research, capable of gracing any stage in the world (au.yamaha.com)

Mr Shindo is also running piano workshops during his trip to Australia, visiting Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as Sydney.
