Warner Music embraces AIM students

AIM’s newest degree, Bachelor of Entertainment Management, is teaching students how to turn their passion for music, entertainment  & the arts into a business.

Warner Music Staff   The Bachelor of Entertainment Management (BEM) began in Semester 1, 2010 and covers all aspects of marketing, law, management and human resources. Offered over two years, the course prepares students for a career in the entertainment industry.

Three students of the Bachelor of Entertainment Management recently completed their final year internships at Warner Music Australia. Kim Wasley, Amy Copeland and Owen Field were lucky enough to experience first-hand the workings of a major music label. The internship ran for 12 weeks and gave the students a better understanding of how their love for music can be turned into a successful business career.

Kim Wasley spent her internship at Warner Music in the marketing department. “I primarily helped with blogging, servicing CDs to media contacts, creative brainstorming for artists promotional campaigns, assisting in competitions and providing input regarding prospective tour paths and strategic partnership proposals,” explains Kim.

Having always wanted to work for a music label, Kim says her time at AIM has definitely reaffirmed this. “The course has really opened my eyes to the entertainment industry. There are so many different avenues I never thought possible. I’m not sure whether I’m best suited to a major or independent, but for the time being I’ve got my sights firmly set on Modular.”

Studying at AIM has not only reassured Kim she’s on the right career path, but it’s also presented her with many opportunities – ones that would not have been possible if it wasn’t for her time at AIM

Amy Copeland spent her internship in the A&R Department, under the supervision of the Head of A&R at Warner Music Australia, Heath Bradbury. Amy says that without a doubt, the internship has been the most enjoyable aspect of the Bachelor of Entertainment Management. “The internship has allowed us to go into the field and put what we’ve learnt into practice, which has been great.”

“I also really enjoyed the people we’ve had the privilege of meeting through AIM – we’ve been taught by many industry professionals,” says Amy.

Owen Field spent his internship in the digital marketing team at Warner Music. While there, he worked on several projects with other interns including marketing campaigns, synchronisation presentations, websites and Facebook competitions.

Owen hopes to secure a job with a small independent music label in Australia or one of the larger labels overseas once he graduates from AIM. “I’d like to get involved with digital marketing campaigns using social media as well as traditional means,” says Owen.

With only one trimester left in their 2-year Bachelor of Entertainment Management degree, Kim, Amy and Owen are hoping the course plus the internship will help them secure a job with the label of their choice.

The Bachelor of Entertainment Management degree has been designed to give AIM students the best possible footing in the industry. According to Program Director Thomas Heymann, “The BEM is a business degree focusing on the entertainment industry, with a particular emphasis on commercial music. AIM students are born entrepreneurs and they will have a competitive advantage in the industry when they graduate. When you join AIM to study the BEM, you are joining the industry.”
