Bachelor of Music with Honours



Qualification
for Entry Students applying for entry into the BMUS (Hons) degree need to provide evidence in the form of an academic transcript of results in semesters three to six of a degree in music or a degree with a major in music.

In the major specialisation units, an achievement of a distinction (75% and above) or higher average is required. 

In all other academic units, an achievement of a credit (65% and above) or higher average is required.

Applicants without this qualification must demonstrate equivalence in terms of ability within a particular major and ability to undertake scholarly research

Overseas Students must possess IELTS 6.5 overall with a 6.0 in writing or an equivalent English language competency. The IELTS cannot be more than 2 years old from the commencement of the course. 

Admission to candidature
The Courses Committee may approve an application for admission provided the Head of Department has certified that the applicant has satisfied the provisions listed above.

In approving admission to candidature, and having considered any recommendations made by the Head of Department, the Dean or his designate shall determine:

• the semester in which the candidate may commence; and
• any additional requirements to be met by the candidate. 

Enrolment
A commencing candidate shall enrol, in the manner prescribed by the Institute, prior to the start of the semester specified by the Dean or his designate.

A continuing student is required to register for units at the start of each semester.
Once enrolled a student must complete all required units within two calendar years.

Status
An applicant may be accepted as a full-time student or as a part-time student.
A full-time time student in a semester will be designated as a student registered in units of 20 credit points.
A part-time time student in a semester will be designated as a student registered in units of less than 20 credit points. 

Program of Study
The Bachelor of Music consists of units totaling 40 credit points.
A student must enrol in the Bachelor of Music with Honours program in either one of the following majors: 

1) Contemporary Performance; or
2) Classical Performance; or
3) Music Theatre; or
4) Audio; or
5) Composition and Music Production; or
6) Arts Management 

To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Music with Honours a student must complete 40 credit points in the designated units listed in Schedule B.

Every unit must have a unit outline approved by the Academic Board and made available to all students registered for that unit. 

Attendance

Students are required to attend all classes as scheduled by AIM.
Attendance will not be given any weight in the provision of a result most units, except for Ensemble units.

Examination
The Head of Department will be responsible for ensuring that all units are examined according to the assessment detailed in the unit outline.

Honours Project 2 examinations must be examined by a panel consisting of at least the Head of Department and an external examiner. If the Head of Department is the teacher the Dean will appoint another suitably qualified staff member to sit on the examination panel. The external examiner must be a suitably qualified individual with recognized expertise in the major being examined. External examiners must be appointed by the Dean.

Results for units will submitted to the Examinations Review C Committee (ERC) at the end of every semester.

The Examinations Review Committee shall determine whether a student has satisfied the requirements of the degree and, if so, recommend to the Academic Board that it be awarded. The award shall be conferred by the Board of Directors of the Australian Institute of Music. 

Honours will be awarded in the class of either first (I) or second (II) or third (III). First class honours will be further divided into three divisions - a, b, c. The determination of the class of honours is determined by the Examinations Review Committee once the Special Project 2 and Honours Thesis units have been completed. The following table contains the schedule for the determination of honours:

Schedule A: AUDITION AND INTERVIEW REQUIREMENTS

Students applying for admission to the Bachelor of Music with Honours are required to:

• undertake an audition and interview in their Major Study (or equivalent for non-AIM applicants) with the Head of Department and Head of Academic Studies. The audition and interview has the primary purpose of assessing specialist skills and potential to complete Honours level study.

PERFORMANCE MAJORS: 
Applicants are to perform contrasting works of approximately 15 minutes duration. If a current AIM student completing semester 6 wishes to have their final Major Study assessment considered for Honours entry, the student must notify Student Services before the commencement of the Examination period that the final Major Study Assessment is to be considered for the audition component. An interview will still need to be conducted at a later date.

AUDIO, COMPOSITION AND MUSIC PRODUCTION MAJORS: 
Applicants must present a portfolio of work representing a range of music work of which the applicant has either been the sole creator or a significant contributor. If a current AIM student completing semester 6 wishes to have their final Major Study assessment considered for Honours entry, the student must notify Student Services before the commencement of the Examination period that the final Major Study Assessment is to be considered for the audition component. An interview will still need to be conducted at a later date.

ARTS MANAGEMENT MAJORS: 
Applicants must give a presentation proposing an Honours project in an Arts Management field. This application can be made at any time before the commencement of the Honours course.
