Wayne Keith Geddes | 1951-2010
With considerable success in a 40-year career that spanned journalism, politics and government, Wayne Geddes always considered himself to be a journalist.
Fondly known as ‘Geddes’ in many circles, Wayne set out on a journalism career in 1969 at Radio 2UW as a cadet under his mentor, Don Rodgers, respected Press Secretary to both Prime Ministers Chifley and Curtin. Upon completion of his four-year cadetship, Wayne secured a position with Radio 2UE, where he worked as a reporter and newsreader, and was promoted to State Parliamentary Reporter. In 1978 he was a founding member of the new Sydney radio station, 2WS. He was often first to report groundbreaking political stories during this period of complex commissions and inquiries in NSW politics.
In 1988 Wayne took up the position of Ministerial Press Secretary for the then NSW Health Minister and later he embodied a similar role for the then NSW Premier.
In 1995, Wayne made the leap to State Rail, working as media adviser through to the late 1990’s. He also worked with ORTA (the Olympics Roads & Traffic Authority) throughout the Sydney Olympics. In 2001, Wayne joined NSW Health’s media unit and soon after, became Director of Communications. In 2008, he was appointed to head up Communications & Knowledge Services for Health Support Services.
A keen photographer, bush walker and music lover, Geddes is forever remembered as devoted soul mate, son, father and brother and a generous mentor and friend.
His true legacy lies in the many lives that he has enhanced forever. It is hoped that his music collection will maintain that legacy for future students of the Australian Institute of Music.
