Electives at AIM & AADA

Shape your course of study

Electives | A few examples

AIM has a vast selection of electives to choose from, offering more elective choices across a broad spectrum of areas, more than any other music or performing arts school in Australia.

Associated Studies are elective units that supplement your studies, allowing you to take units from other streams, allowing you to shape and create diversity in your education. Students elect two Associated Studies every semester from stage 3.

Here are some examples:

P2AR1
Arranging

introduces students to chart writing and arranging for contemporary ensembles.
Students will learn to arrange the rhythm section from lead sheets (melody and chords), producing a score and performance parts. Standard notation techniques and conventions for the rhythm section (piano, guitar, bass, drums) are placed in the context of performance practice and musical genres. Techniques for the creation of MIDI mock-ups are introduced. In the second half of the semester the lead sheet structure is extended by the creation of introductions and endings.

M1AL1

A1AT1
Audio Technology
This unit introduces the student to the principles of sound, how it is created, and how sound is perceived by the ear. The student’s ability to centre, focus and embody the moment will be developed. The unit explores individual strengths and group communication techniques in order to encourage confidence and ensemble trust and reliance.

A1DT
Digital Technology
The unit introduces students to the concept of digital audio workstations, and how they may be used as a versatile production tool. The equipment used in this is typical of what is found in a home studio environment, and programs such as Logic and Pro Tools LE are used. Once the student has gained an understanding of the general layout of the DAW, they learn the principles of mixing. Students are provided with pre-recorded material and learn how to manipulate each track using pan, volume and mute. The unit then introduces the concepts of effects and how they may be applied, before moving on to simple automation techniques. Students then learn how to create stereo files in different delivery formats.

P3MV1

A2ES1
Electronic Music - Synthesis

This associated study unit will provide an understanding for performers, composers and engineers of opportunities for creating musical sounds using the huge array of synthesis models available today. By first understanding the nature of sound itself, then examining how traditional instruments create and control sound, the unit explores how we can synthesise existing instrumental sounds and create brand new ones. An historical journey from the Telharmonium (1897) via the Theremin, Hammond Organ, Moog, Rhodes Piano, DX7, K250 to the digital softsynths of today is used as a primer to the basic elements of analogue to digital synthesis. All the main synthesis models available today are introduced and discussed.

Guitar Skills
Guitar Skills I is an Associated Study (elective) which provides an opportunity for non-guitar players to develop foundation skills that will provide a support instrument for singer-songwriters and also aid general musicianship, composing and arranging. The student will begin by exploring correct posture and plectrum/finger technique, followed by incremental study of chords from basic major, minor and 7th shapes to other barre options and strumming/finger techniques (plectrum hand).

Major and minor scales and arpeggios, modes and related seventh chords and alternative voicing of chords and inversions.
