Honours is a further specialisation of study for students who have achieved distinction or above in their degree, and who wish to further develop their depth of study. Students applying for entry into the BMUS (Hons) degree need to provide evidence in the form of an academic transcript of results in semesters three to six of a degree in music or a degree with a major in music.
In the major specialisation units, an achievement of a distinction (75% and above) or higher average is required. In all other academic units, an achievement of a credit (65% and above) or higher average is required.
Applicants without this qualification must demonstrate equivalence in terms of ability within a particular major and ability to undertake scholarly research
Program of Study The Bachelor of Music consists of units totaling 40 credit points. A student must enrol in the Bachelor of Music with Honours program in either one of the following majors:
1) Contemporary Performance; or 2) Classical Performance; or 3) Music Theatre; or 4) Audio; or 5) Composition and Music Production; or 6) Arts Management
AUDITION AND INTERVIEW REQUIREMENTS Students applying for admission to the Bachelor of Music with Honours are required to:
• undertake an audition and interview in their Major Study (or equivalent for non-AIM applicants) with the Head of Department and Head of Academic Studies. The audition and interview has the primary purpose of assessing specialist skills and potential to complete Honours level study.
CONTEMPORARY | CLASSICAL | MUSIC THEATRE MAJORS: Applicants are to perform contrasting works of approximately 15 minutes duration. If a current AIM student completing semester 6 wishes to have their final Major Study assessment considered for Honours entry, the student must notify Student Services before the commencement of the Examination period that the final Major Study Assessment is to be considered for the audition component. An interview will still need to be conducted at a later date.
AUDIO, COMPOSITION AND MUSIC PRODUCTION MAJORS: Applicants must present a portfolio of work representing a range of music work of which the applicant has either been the sole creator or a significant contributor. If a current AIM student completing semester 6 wishes to have their final Major Study assessment considered for Honours entry, the student must notify Student Services before the commencement of the Examination period that the final Major Study Assessment is to be considered for the audition component. An interview will still need to be conducted at a later date.
ENTERTAINMENT & ARTS MANAGEMENT MAJORS: Applicants must give a presentation proposing an Honours project in an Arts Management field. This application can be made at any time before the commencement of the Honours course.
