AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF DRAMATIC ART

Become a Drama Teacher

Become a High School Drama Teacher

Teaching drama can be one of the most sustainable and satisfying careers for any theatre school graduate. Sharing your passion and skills as you develop and inspire new talents can be highly rewarding. Whether as a full-time career or as a means to support a part-time performance career, undertaking a teaching qualification is a viable option for anyone in the performing arts.

This partnership is specifically for theatre performance graduates from AADA seeking to qualify as a Secondary College drama school teacher. Graduates of the Bachelor of Performance may enter the programs at the Australian Catholic University as double drama majors.

In recent years, demand for drama teachers in New South Wales’ schools has increased considerably. In response to this demand, the Australian Academy of Dramatic Art (AADA), as a department of the Australian Institute of Music (AIM), has launched an exciting new initiative with the Australian Catholic University (ACU).

The Pathway to Drama Teaching is a partnership created specifically for theatre performance graduates from AADA acting school seeking to qualify as a secondary school drama teacher. Graduates of the Bachelor of Performance enter the programs at the Australian Catholic University with Drama as one of their two needed teaching areas.

Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)

The Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) is a 1-year full-time or part-time equivalent course designed to prepare secondary teachers to meet the requirements for teaching in Catholic, independent and government schools. The course aims to produce teachers who: continue to think deeply and critically about the ends and means of education and the social, political and cultural contexts that shape schools; are committed to their continuing professional and ethical development; and are committed to working justly and collaboratively to make a positive difference in the lives of their students, and to shape a more just and equitable society.

Master of Teaching (Secondary)

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a 2-years full-time or equivalent program, designed to prepare secondary teachers to meet the requirements for teaching in Catholic, independent and government schools. The course provides a particular focus on enabling participants to adopt a research-based approach to reflective practice and to consider the implications and applications of such an approach to their own professional development and to its contribution to the learning and wellbeing of those whom they teach.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have the equivalent of an Australian University Bachelor’s degree with a major in drama that meets the NSW Institute of Teachers subject content requirements for drama. AADA’s Bachelor of Performance meets these requirements.

Location

The two-year Bachelor of Performance is offered at the Main Campus in Surry Hills, Sydney and at the Pilgrim Theatre in Pitt Street, Sydney. Postgraduate drama teaching is offered at the Australian Catholic University’s Strathfield Campus, Sydney.
