Entry requirements - what music grade does AIM expect an applicant to be at?
At AIM, we dont place a big emphasis on AMEB grades for entry, as valuable as they are. We are more interested in you being able to play or sing well. So with that in mind, our entry is based solely on an audition and interview process, where we can gauge your current skill level and potential, and place you into the best stream of study for you.
What UAI score is needed?
No UAI, AMEB or any other acronym is a requirement for study at AIM.
What are the career prospects for someone with a music qualification?
As far as career prospects are concerned, we encourage students to think of themselves as a business. You will need to develop and maintain your skills, as they are your products. For example; you will need to be on time, polite and professional, as you represent your products because... well they’re yours... these are the musicians who get the gigs.
In view of long term prospects, music teaching is a reality. We have just formed an agreement with the ACU (Australian Catholic University) where AIM graduates are automatically accepted into a one or two year Graduate Certificate or Masters of Education. This qualification coupled with our Bachelor of Music allows you to teach Music throughout Australia and the world. Click here for more about Pathways to Teaching
Possible Music career pathways can include:
Live performers, singers, instrumentalists, conductors, producers, composers, session musicians, recording artists, managers, administrators, promoters, marketing, accompanists, studio teachers, music teachers (private, high school or tertiary), and audio engineers, just to name a few.
The music industry is competitive, and it will most likely be necessary for you to combine a variety of these skills for a successful career. Given the ongoing fragmentation of the music industry as we know it, the ability to diversify with a variety of skills is becoming vital. Gone are the days of the major record labels controlling the industry, and the traditional pathways. In are the days of small business, and independently skilled operators, flexible enough to move and develop with technology and communications. The more skills you have, the better chance you will give yourself of a successful career.
What is unique about AIM?
AIM is a purpose built educational music institute. We have access to some of the best musicians and performers who teach in Sydney, who have been performing and teaching all over the world. At AIM we are focussed on performance and music skills for the real world. With that said, we are not top heavy on theory although you will become proficient in music theory while you study here. Our facilities include the amazing QStudios, where students have the opportunity to record their work in one of the most impressive studios in Sydney. We also have the John Painter Hall (live venue) where students get to hone and practise their skills on a real stage in front of a real audience.
The Australian Institute of Music courses are recognised for delivering exceptional music tuition and unique industry-focused programs. We know just what it takes to be successful in an ever-changing industry. In the complex and competitive environment that is the music business today, getting the right education isn’t just essential - it’s critical.
Our programs offer the flexibility needed for students to individually tailor their studies to incorporate performance skills, business management, marketing, individual instrument or voice lessons, hands-on audio and music production classes and other specialised units. Class sizes are small, with attention to detail and skill development.
Our courses are focused to be relevant both to our students and to the industry in which our graduates will find themselves. As an Australian Institute of Music student, you’ll develop the confidence and skills that will prepare you for the realities of today’s music industry.
